There's another potential issue. If you don't include the amdgpu driver and firmware files then (some) AMD laptops won't be able to boot from external USB-C drives. The AMD firmware files include updated fixed USB-C board firmware. Yes, it's odd that functional USB-C storage requires the GPU driver, but that's the way it is. AMD presumably include the latest firmware to get USB-C docks working, and the fact it also fixes booting from external drives is an unintended side effect.
